Launceston Flood Protection

The Launceston levee wall renewal project initiated, by the federal government came as a response to a changing climate and a fear that low low-lying infrastructure and communities of Launceston may be impacted by inundation should the rivers that surround the city reach peak capacity.

The levee’s concept was to protect the City of Launceston from severe flood events that could occur at the confluence of the North and South Esk River basins, however, continue to unify the city art, historical, educational and sporting precinct with the CBD.

In 2016 Launceston experienced severe flooding, the largest since 1969.  The levee performed above expectations, and avoided losses of over $216 million.
