Psychosocial and Living Accommodation

Psychosocial and Living Accommodation at Cadbury Road is a 14-apartment assisted living complex.  Working in collaboration with Homes Tasmania and the Fairbrother Foundation, developed a building that aimed to interrupt the institutional principles that often underpin such facilities.  The development navigates the complexities of a steep site, with a form that gestures towards the local community to create a welcoming and inviting approach for residents and visitors. Through the expansive use of glass, textured concrete and natural timber the building character is shaped as robust, yet warm and friendly. Large glass panels often blur the transitions between interior and exterior, while offering connectivity of spaces throughout the development.

The layout takes advantage of the differing vistas the site has to offer and choreographs an experience whereby the residents move through a series of communal spaces before leading to their apartments. Each apartment is fully self-contained with universally accessible features and enjoys its own private open space in the form of a balcony or courtyard.
